When Should Subaru Belts and Hoses be Replaced?

When you see the signs. They're similar, whichever Subaru model you drive. Look for obvious looseness or damage and listen for screeching or chirping noises. Other telltale symptoms: fluid leaks, battery and lighting trouble, and engine overheats and misfires. Just be sure to run an inspection; it'll tell you which belts and hoses may be the problems.

When you hit mileage and year benchmarks. The serpentine belt, for instance, you change every 90,000 miles or so. For most timing belts, on the other hand, it's about every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. Timing chains, however, usually don't need to be changed unless they break. Most hoses, though, you replace every 4 years.

Before replacement costs start to add up. In other words, when you notice lots of signs at once, or run up against maintenance deadlines -- so, sooner rather than later. That's because things like serpentine belts and brake hoses, which can be some of the cheaper fixes, run a couple hundred dollars on average; things only get pricier from there. Sure, fuel hoses can run $50 or $60, sometimes, but they're $500 on average. It's with radiator hoses and timing belts, for example, that bills get worse: they can run $540 to $620 on average, and $500 to $1,100 on average, respectively.
