Get TR Racing Chops for Your Subaru WRX: Three Ways to Do it for Less

WRX is one of the most popular rally-ready sports cars around for good reason. It's quintessentially Subaru, built for performance. Take the 2024 model, for instance.

If you drive anything like it, then you already know what a turbocharged 2.4-liter, flat-four SUBARU BOXER engine pushing 271 horses can do on the highway. Now, factor in Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD), and you'll be able to see just how the car gets zero to 60 mph in a little over 5 seconds.

The WRX TR trim, though? The pinnacle of the brand's commitment to performance excellence. The acronym used to stand for "tuner-ready," meaning serious prospects for upgrades. Now, though, the car's a fully loaded $47,000+ investment.

Luckily, you can get similar upgrades for your WRX without spending new-car money, whether you drive a base model, you've stepped up to Premium, gone luxury in Limited, or stopped just short of max adrenaline with a GT.

Here are three great mods to start with.

1. Suspension and Steering

2024 Subaru WRX TR has two major perks: stiffer springs and a tuned power-steering rack. You can get similar thrills with a comparable mod at a fraction of the cost: by lowering the suspension -- swapping out factory springs for lowering springs -- and by putting on performance shocks and struts.

2. Brakes

WRX TR might have grippy Bridgestone Potenza 245/35R-19 tires, but it couldn't be the performance monster it is without Brembo brakes. Special brake calipers -- six-piston up front and two-piston fixed in back -- plus beefy 3.4-inch front and 12.8-inch rear brake rotors (the ones in back being cross-drilled).

It can get pretty close, though; you can customize the calipers and rotors for less -- shop our selection and see for yourself. A great finishing touch: ceramic brake pads.

3. Induction System

Want to try to one-up the TR a little bit? There's a quick and easy way to get a few more horses, not to mention a couple extra pound-feet of torque. Swap out the turbo for a supercharger, put a cold air intake in place of the factory intake, and change the engine filter to a performance engine air filter.

Putting in a custom exhaust can't hurt, either; it'll help relieve backpressure. You'll get a more aggressive rev out of it, too -- something nobody's going to mistake for coming from anything other than a Subaru sports car.

Not sure how to go about any of these updates? Don't worry; a Subaru dealer will be glad to help.
