Changing Subaru Air Filters DIY is Easy -- Here's How

Driving your Subaru, you notice the Check Engine light come on the dash. Maybe the engine has been misfiring or losing power lately, and you've been having trouble speeding up. Of course, if black smoke's billowing out of the exhaust, to, something's up.

Luckily, it's not a fuel injector gone bad, most of the time. It's not even an ignition coil failing. Usually, it just means you need to replace your air filters.

The job's pretty simple. Here's how to do it, in most cases. Check your owner's manual for specifics, though.

Engine Air Filters

1. Pop your hood, find the top of the engine filter's housing (your manual can help), and take it off.
2. Remove the old filter and then clean out the housing. A Shop-Vac's a good tool for that, but anything that gets rid of dirt and debris will work. Make sure to get all the housing's edges.
3. Put the new filter in; its rubber rim should face up/out. Then, replace the housing's top.

Cabin Air Filters

1. Open your glove compartment, find the pin and screw that hold it up, pop them out, and lower the compartment.
2. Pull the cabin filter cover off; it should be right behind the compartment.
3. Take the old filter out and clean out the housing area, either by vacuuming it, wiping it out, or otherwise.
4. Put the new filter in, put the cover back on, raise the glove box back up, replace the screw and pin, and close the compartment.
