1980s

The Subaru Brat was a compact, unibody pickup truck manufactured by Subaru from 1978 to 1994. It was created to suit the growing need for small, flexible utility vehicles, and it included the brand's iconic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The Brat's body style was compact and low ride height, giving it a more car-like appearance compared to traditional trucks. It shared a chassis with the Subaru Leone, providing car-like handling and comfort with limited off-road capability. The Brat was powered by Subaru's trademark BOXER engine, which is famed for its low center of gravity and balance. It featured a variety of engine options over the years, with early models having a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and later models boasting a 1.8L engine, which provided slightly superior performance.

The Brat's part-time 4WD technology enabled drivers to switch between front-wheel drive and 4WD modes, making it suitable for both on-road and light off-road driving. The cargo bed on the truck was smaller than that of a standard pickup truck, but it was suitable for light hauling. Some models included tonneau covers for the bed, which protected cargo from the elements. The Brat was phased out in 1994 due to stricter safety regulations and shifting market trends. It was eventually replaced with the Subaru Baja.
