Keep Your Subaru in Top Shape: Maintenance in Four Easy Steps
Your Subaru. A car like WRX, an SUV like Forester, or otherwise, you love it for its rugged quality, unrivaled safety and dependability on- and off-road, and technological sophistication. Maybe most of all, though, you appreciate just how affordable it is to repair (not to mention upgrade).
Lose track of what fixes need doing when, though, and your ride's sure to run down -- and run up a repair bill. The best way to keep up with everything: stick to the schedule in your owner's manual.
Here's a few key things to do regularly; take care of them, and your Subaru should run many more years and miles.
1. Change the Oil Filter
Do this -- and flush and replace your motor oil -- every 3,000 miles or every 3 months or so. You should also do it when you see the signs of a faulty oil filter. They include an engine oil warning light on the dash, a loss of oil pressure (check the oil filter housing's gasket, in this case; you might have a leak), an underperforming engine, a stressed oil pump, and worn-out pump bearings.
2. Replace the Engine Air Filter
This, you should do every 12,000 miles or so -- don't let it go any longer than 15,000 miles. You'll find the engine filter in the air cleaner assembly under the hood, on or near the engine. Keep an eye out for the signs of a bad air filter, too (other than obviously dirty, damaged, or worn filter media). You'll know one from a Check Engine light on the dash, engine power loss, misfires, trouble speeding up, worsening fuel economy, and black smoke in the exhaust.
3. Change the Spark Plugs
Take care of this every 18,000 miles or more, depending on what type your Subaru has; some spark plugs can last up to 100,000 miles. You'll also need to take care of it if you see any signs the plugs have failed -- namely, corroded or excessively widened leads, worsening conductivity, engine misfires, and engine failure.
4. Use Genuine OEM Parts for Repairs
They'll be Subaru quality and guaranteed to fit. Plus, unlike aftermarket parts, using them won't void your factory warranty. We stock plenty at steep discounts; if you're wondering how to install something, a certified Subaru service center will be glad to help.
