The Subaru Baja, which was produced between 2002 and 2006, is a compact utility vehicle with automobile and pickup truck elements. It was developed for drivers who want the versatility of a truck bed combined with the handling and comfort of a car. Based on the Subaru Legacy/Outback platform, it combines the brand's distinctive all-wheel-drive system with a practical, small pickup-like design. The Baja's truck bed, which features Subaru's revolutionary "Switchback System," allows the rear seats to fold down and the rear wall of the cabin to open, extending the bed length to accommodate larger objects. The unique exterior style included protective cladding around the body and roof rails for enhanced versatility.

The Baja had two engine options: a base 2.5L SOHC 4-cylinder engine and a turbocharged 2.5L DOHC 4-cylinder engine in the Baja Turbo model. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The interior is based on the Subaru Outback and features a functional cabin with seating for four. In higher trims, features included power windows, air conditioning, and leather upholstery.
